While it may appear that launchd executes the maintenance scripts "on the fly" if the computer is asleep or shutdown at the appointed time, this is a side effect of how the timer treats the time the computer has spent in sleep mode. The timer used by launchd does not count sleep time. If your Mac is asleep at the scheduled time when a given script is supposed to run, the script may run later that day at a time shifted by the amount of time the Mac was asleep. However, if you restart your Mac before the time-shifted execution time, pending events are lost and the script will not run off-schedule: the next chance for the script to run will be at its regularly scheduled time.

HFS+ is a dual-fork journaled fs with metadata support. HFS+ is a fragmenting FS, although with hot-file clustering the need for explicit de-fragmentation is pretty low. By default HFS+ is case-insensitive but case-preserving. You can configure it as fully case-sensitive by reformatting, but this is a very uncommon configuration and many user apps will break.

Update: The need to clear your destop has become controversial. Some folks claim that Apple has completely changed the way that things are represented on your desktop and that it no longer matters how many items are on your desktop. Others say that they still see a slowdown from having too many items on their desktop, and that clearing their desktop resolves the problem. it's hard to tell which is the truth, because no one has explained what the changes are, exactly, and Apple has no technical briefs saying that a change was made. From anecdotal evidence, I think that the situation is somewhere inbetween. I think that there is still some overhead required to put all of the icons on your destop, but that the performance hit isn't nearly what it once was.

Another way to go is to put all of the items that would normally reside on your desktop, that you want to be able to access quickly, in a folder; park that folder somewhere other than on your desktop, and then drag that folder to your Dock so that it is always available from the Dock. Whenever you click and hold (or Control-click, or right-click on a two button mouse) on that folder in the Dock, you will be presented with a menu of everything in that folder to choose from. Sort of like the old classic Apple Menu.

A Terminal emulator can be found in /Applications/Utilities.

As you can see, utilizing Homebrew is a great method to avoid the tedious process of manually configuring your CMake command to compile OpenCV via source (my full list of OpenCV install tutorials can be found on this page).

When the process is finished, the word Done will appear in the Terminal window.
